Dental Care Tips for Teens

The percentage of visits to the dentist decreases drastically with teens.  Teenagers go through a significant period of growth that includes the shape and size of their jaw.  It is essential that your teen continues with their regular dental check-ups.  It is recommended that your teen see the dentist every 6 months for an exam, cleaning and x-rays when necessary.

  • Neglecting oral hygiene can lead to gingivitis or gum disease.
  • 6 out of 10 teens have gum disease.  This results in red or inflamed gums, bad breath and bleeding gums.
  • Brush and floss 2 times a day (morning and night) and follow with a fluoride rinse at bedtime.
  • It is important to choose healthy snacks. Processed foods like candy and chips increase the probability of decay.
  • Wisdom teeth begin to erupt during the teen years and can cause pain, discomfort and advanced gum disease in the posterior regions of the mouth. Your dentist will be able to notify you if the wisdom teeth need to be removed.
  • Many teens decide upon getting oral piercings. This is discouraged because they are difficult to keep clean and can lead to other issues such as periodontal disease and fracturing of healthy tooth structure.
  • More than 1 in 4 teens use tobacco products. Tobacco use affects not only your heart and lungs but can lead to esophageal and oral cancers.
  • When participating in any sports, wearing a guard is recommended to protect teeth from any trauma. Discuss a custom fit sports guard with your dentist.
